Question:

Tasks:

  1. Explain the process of “climate change” according to current scientific evidence, and the cause(s) of current global warming
  • What is viewed as the main cause of increased carbon dioxide emissions in the atmosphere in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries?
  • Select and cite a credible source to support your answer and description of the greenhouse effect, such as one from the “Related Website” from page 238 of the textbook.
  • An original figure or diagram (that you create) may be used to describe your answer.
  1. Research and describe a specific viable solution to mitigate climate change
  • Identify an innovative solution, strategy, policy, or technology that you believe could help Canada mitigate climate change.
  • Locate a published article (news or media, academic journal, government, academic) which is related to the effectiveness of your selected solution and summarize the opinion of the author in your report. Be sure to include the citation for this reference.
  • Include a comment on at least one potential shortfall of your solution.
  1. Create a flow diagram to depict how your solution will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, on one page or less.

Answer:

Introduction

With the increasing human population and industrialization, over the last century, emission has increased substantially. This, in turn has elevated the amount of greenhouse gases for instance, carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As a result, the energy from the sun is prevented from being reflected back, causing the globe to heat (Global climate change, 2019). A number of factors causes global warming. Greenhouse gases, for instance methane, carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxide are the main cause of global warming. Additionally, human activities on the earth surface has proven to be a catalyst of global warming. For instance, during mining and farming, some gases may be emitted causing an increase in the greenhouse effect. Moreover, solar radiation variance is thought to increase the effect of global warming. The amount of energy radiated to the earth’s surface by the sun, may result to change in temperatures, leading to global variation of temperatures.

Cause of Carbon dioxide rise

Industrialization has been attributed to the increase in greenhouse gas concentration in the atmosphere over the years. (Friedrich & Damassa, 2014). Greenhouse effect is the increase in temperature on the earth’s surface, and is the condition responsible for climate change (National science centres, 2016).

Solution to Mitigate Climate Change in Canada

Despite climate change being one of the greatest threats to humans, it is possible to mitigate the condition. The Canadian government should set certain standards, to help them reduce the amount of greenhouse gases. Policies is the main idea that the Canadian government should use for mitigation. Canada has put across various policies that will help moderate climate change. These policies help in regulation of fossils fuel use, and embracing the use of clean energy. The main aim is to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases, and other conditions that may lead to climate change. Policies created to mitigate climate change include, policies for controlling greenhouse gases and policies for carbon use (Clean Growth and Climate Change, 2019).

Policies on Greenhouse Gases

The government of Canada has developed policies to help control the amount of greenhouse gases emitted annually. The Greenhouse Gas Reporting Program is an example of a body mandated to control the amount of greenhouse gases in the country. For instance, companies have to record and submit the amount of gases produced through various processes, to help regulate it (Clean Growth and Climate Change, 2019). Through this, the government has been able to reduce the amount of greenhouse gases in Canada.

Policies on Fossil Fuels

Certain guidelines about the use and pricing of carbon fuels has helped in regulating the amount of greenhouses gases in the environment. This has helped in mitigation of climate change in the country, through control of greenhouse gases.

Control of carbon fuel prices

In the past, Canadian industries contributed less on climate change restoration since they produced higher gas emissions, compared to the price of fuel they consumed. However, the government opted to increase gasoline and diesel prices over the years to help mitigate climate change. The value added tax on carbon fuels ensures industries minimize the amount of carbon fuel consumption. This helps in reduction of greenhouse gases on the environment. Additionally, with an increase in fuel prices, companies are forced to find other cheap sources of energy (Clean Growth and Climate Change, 2019). As a result, companies adopt cheaper environmentally friendly sources

Adopting clean energy

The Canadian government has adopted a new way to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emission. Through various policies, the government has ensured a shift to clean, non-emitting forms of energy. These policies support both Canadian households and large-scale companies, by discouraging the use of fossil fuels and embracing cheap clean energy across the country. Additionally, policies have helped deliver funds essential in ensuring the shift to clean energy sources is achieved. Moreover, certain policies have been developed to avoid politicking of climate change matters (Clean Growth and Climate Change, 2019).  This has helped in finding a universal solution to climate change in Canada.

Shortfall of Policies in Achieving Climate Change in Canada

Although many policies have been put in place to curb climate change, some shortfalls limit the acceleration of achieving it. For instance, the government aims at reducing the carbon leakage in the country, rather than curbing emissions from big industries. Price rise on fossil fuels does not provide an everlasting solution; rather it just reduces the amount of greenhouse gases. Moreover, the Canadian government has invested a lot in hydroelectric power, which is not fully a clean energy. Hydropower companies use fossil fuels in development of electricity (Climate Action Network, 2018). So, although there is a move towards clean energy, these still proves to be an obstacle

Conclusion

Global warming is a problem that can be fixed with the correct measures. The Canadian government has done a lot to help reverse this condition. The policies implemented by the government has helped minimize the effects of climate change. However, there is still a lot to be done, to ensure the amount of greenhouses gases has been maintained. For these to be achieved, further solutions to fit the standoffs should be developed.
